連邦最高裁判事のJohn Paul Stevens引退表明を受け、オバマ大統領が５０歳の女性エレナ・ケイガン（Elena Kagan）を連邦最高裁の判事候補に指名しました。昨年のソニア・ソトマイヨールに続く２人目の女性指名です。
さてケイガンはどんな女性なのでしょう？
結果的にソトマイヨールが指名された昨年も有力候補と見られていたケイガンは、シカゴ大学ロースクール（法科大学院）教授、ビル・クリントンの元で大統領副法律顧問、ハーバード大学ロースクール（法科大学院）総長、といった経歴を経て、現在オバマ大統領の元で訟務長官を務めています。つまり、女性だから、というのではなく、連邦最高裁の判事になる資格を十分に備えた人物というわけです。（判事の経験がないことは、かえって有利になると言われています。なぜなら、これまで判定を下していないので、非難される材料があまりないからです）
オバマ大統領の行動を追えば、口先ばっかりフェミニストの政治家とは全然違うことがわかります。
つまり、walk the walkですね！

渡辺由佳里のひとり井戸端会議 
ユダヤ人で、かつ、ハーバードロースクールということは間違いなくリベラル派ですね。共和党反対を押し切るために、世間から同情を買いやすい女性候補を選んだのでしょう。
この辺の心理戦が、オバマが非常にしたたかなところですね。

民主党大統領ですからリベラルを選ぶのは当然だとは思いますし、引退する判事がリベラルなのでバランスを取る意味ではそれも良いと思います。でも、ハーバードロースクールの総長時代には、白人男性ばかりでしかも保守派の教授を多く雇い、マイノリティや女性をあまり採用しなかったことで批判を受けたりもしたのです。
ですから、意外と中道なのではないかと私は見ています。

彼女は、政治家でもビジネスマンでも、あるいは専業主婦であっても、どんな職業でも必ず成功したであろう頭のキレと行動力を持った人だと思います。
彼女がディーンになってから、ロースクール内の全ての女子トイレには生理用品が置かれるようになりました（無料でたっぷりとカゴに入っている）。実際、その快適さに感動したのですが、リベラルとはいえ圧倒的に男性の多いロースクールでこのような予算を取ることの苦労を考えると、彼女の気遣いの細やかさと行動力がうかがえるエピソードではないか思います。

女子トイレと生理用品というのは、いろいろな意味でケイガンの人となりを想像させてくれるエピソードです。判例がなくても、こういうところから多くのことを察することができるような気がします。巷の苦労も知る彼女に最高裁の判事になって欲しいと強く思ってます。
